Merry Christmas from Mary Jo

I imagine most of you are too busy to even read this now. But since we had our family Christmas yesterday at John and Sue's, I have time to write. I'm enclosing a picture that shows what we have to be grateful for this Christmas. Both mom and Paul are doing well after their cancer surgeries. In fact, Paul had a CT and blood work done this week and the oncologist said that everything was good. In fact he does not have to go back for blood work for six months.

I guess that's all for now. Merry Christmas and I hope to hear from you in the New Year.

P.S. The other picture is the 3 Warren kids opening presents.

My turn!

Okay so like my mom was the last to blog, but hey, I need to crash it. I'm bored!!!! School is finally over for the term. I have no clue how I did in classes, but I really don't care XD. LOL. No seriously, I'm carrying a 4.0 GPA right now and I probably got a B, so it's alright. Bye bye 4.0! Hehehe, but either way, I know I passed my courses.

I got my hair cut. So all of the Warren side will see it at Aunt Sue's on Xmas day! Well, okay, not the 25th but the 23rd. But it's a short-medium length. It should be easier to handle. But who knows...hell, my hair is even dyed too! That I'm sure you all knew, but if not, it's a reddish-brown. It's a pertty (yes I misspelled it on purpose) color XD.

Well, work is a mess right now. They are moving me to full time and I'll be working 1445-2315 shift. Perfect except I'll have to quit Doane and I really like it there. So I'm probably going to quit work, but I don't know yet. I'm trying to get my supervisors to work with me, but for now it's back to UNK I go. Gah! I am going to take one class there this spring and drive over 2 days a week. I'm also taking one at CCC on MWF from 1300-1350. So that will be interesting. But hopefully I will be able to get stuff done and stay at Doane. If my supervisors will allow me 2 nights off a week that is consistent for the rotation, then I can continue at Doane. but if not, bye bye Doane. So as you can tell, it's a mess and I'm stressed!

Not much else to report. I just wanted to crash the blog since I'm bored. I haven't received my syllabus yet from ELS at CCC so I can't start my course that is 1 credit through the learning center. Bummer. *Yawns*. Well, perhaps I should go take a nap. I ate too much and am tired. Ugh, oh and I'm going on Weight Watchers!!! Hehehe. Talk to you all later.

from Mary Jo

To Janice....I hope Paul and I will make it to KC. It mostly depends on what time of the month it is and whether Paul is still irrigating. I'm hoping we can pull it off. The last time I was in KC was to accompany Suzanne when we met Andrew and Joann at Worlds of Fun (NOT my idea of fun)...after one day, I skipped out and went to the Truman Library and a fascinating tour of a church that is an offshoot of the Latter Day Saints. It offered tours and an organ concert. Yeah, I know, I'm just a fun gal!!! The other time we were there was when Andrew competed in a car audio competition...and coincidentally a big cat show was also at the auditorium. Both "hobbies" seem a bit peculiar to an outsider. I did hear the World War I Museum recently opened in Kansas City. I would like to tour that, so hopefully we can do that in September, too.

I'm sure you're all farther along in holiday preps than I am. I have no decorating, baking, or shopping done. Just finished the Christmas letter today, but it is not sent. I've been concentrating on getting the day care visits done early in the month, and then I'll get "into" Christmas.

Hope you are all well. There seems to be a lot of colds, sore throats, etc I'm finding on my visits. Paul and Suzanne both had some version of that and just this morning Suzanne went to the Dr. to get a diagnosis on horribly bloodshot eyes. It turns out to be some kind of CONTAGIOUS infection (but not pink eye). Yikes!!!

Sept. 2007---Talbott's

Hello to all and particularly the Wiles family. Many congratulations to Elissa and Matt on your upcoming nuptuals. Tim and I would like to participate in your celebration. I cannot speak for our next generation, and know that the #### add up when planning such an event.

Tom introduced his friend, Brenda, to the family at Thanksgiving. She is from Schuyler and will finish her BS in nursing next May. She is interested in trauma nursing. Quite ironic, since Heather is now an RN and works at the Bryan/LGH West trauma unit.

Ben and Heather joined us for dinner on Thursday and then he was called to work. His run for the day was to Sioux City, so he called at about 6 pm and said the train would go through Yutan in about 20 minutes. Sure enough, as several of us ran out to the vehicles, we heard the long whistles of a freight train. We roared down to the crossing east of Mom and Dad's and waited for the train to arrive. It was right on time and we were treated to Ben's greeting. He does control the whistle as the engineer. It seemed like the train was extra long. Ben told us on Friday that it was 7200 feet long!!!! They don't go very fast on that stretch of track, so it took quite a while for the whole thing to pass. I was very happy to actually see him doing his work and very impressed with the responsibility he is entrusted with.

Saturday Tim and I took his mother back to Lexington. She was with us for a week and seemed to enjoy the change of pace. She is 89 and quite sharp mentally. She does depend on a walker for mobility, but otherwise is quite independent.

Time to close,
Connie

More info from Janice

I probably should have told you that the date is not yet set in stone - any time in September, depending on the venue chosen and availability. And this is just to get an approximate idea of numbers, not a binding RSVP! So, actually, Nancy, your answer was fine. (If numbers get tight, we may not be able to include the 2nd cousins on the guest list.)

Love you all,

Janice

RSVP from the Meyer family

Dear Janice,
I can say for certain that Stan and I will be at the wedding and I would hope that a few of the offspring might come, but there are no guarantees. So, my response is 2 up to 6. I'm sure that will help with your planning :)
Love,
Nancy

Wiles wedding plans

Dear family,

As you all know, Elissa and Matt are planning to be married next September in Kansas City. We are trying to pick a venue that would be an appropriate space for our guest lists. I know this is very unorthodox, but I could get an ulcer if we don't make some progress on this very soon! We have no idea how many friends and relatives may be able to work out the travel involved for this event. As KC is so far away, it would be very helpful if you could give me a 'possibly', or a 'probably not', so we would have a better idea of numbers. (I guarantee your answer will be very helpful, and there will be no hard feelings. We just want to get these two married!)

Thanks.

Janice

I got the pictures to load this time so you can share our misery :}

Nancy's Update

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!
We had a nice holiday, traveling to Syracuse for dinner at the Senior Center with Erma's family, then on to Yutan to see the Bull family. I'm always glad when everyone's back at home safe and sound. Beth just called to say she's back in Missouri, so I can breathe easier about that.
We've had some disruption in our basement the last few weeks. Here's the abbreviated version: I found the carpet soaked for an unknown reason while there were 15 people upstairs for a meeting; our Pastor stayed afterwards to help us move furniture and pull carpet; diagnosis was that water was coming from the kitchen sink and dishwasher and bubbling up through a crack in the concrete; Pastor helped tear up concrete by crack--no pipe; pipe was six feet away; pipe has a half inch split along the bottom for as far as we can reach under the floor; we're waiting for a return call from a contractor to take out the 20+ feet of concrete that have to be torn up to get to the pipe (people in small towns don't have to take every job b/c they have a monopoly); we have gotten quite good at washing dishes in a large pan, then carrying the water out to put on thirsty bushes. I remember Grandma Bull saying how grateful she was for the water pressure she had in her kitchen after they moved to town and I totally understand. I didn't realize how nice a kitchen sink was to have available :}
I've tried to attach some pictures, but once again, my computer skills are failing me. I'm going to try another post so you can see, but they don't do justice to how strong a smell can come from fermented muck. The plywood did help, though. We're hoping our home insurance will cover most of this, but during Stan's first conversation with the agent, he said the company would cover cleaning the carpet and that's all. Yikes!!! I'll keep you posted on my posts.........
Have a healthy and safe Christmas season, everyone!!
Love,
Nancy

WE HAVE A NEW COMPUTE R PEEPS!!!!

hellllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooo (from Seinfeld). We have FINALLY got a new computer!!!! W00t! So like I know, long time no talk and long time no absence, but hey, at least we have one :). So it's back to usual here :).

Quickie update. School is going well. I have a personality paper I'm working on. It's due in a couple of weeks. My paper is taking 3 models of personality and rating them according to the author's criteria and then after that, writing my own theory of personality. So therefore, I'm incorporating the Birth Order Effect, Big 5 Personality Traits, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and Buddhism into my theory of personality. That way I will have enough to cover the pages necessary for my paper. Problem Solving is going well.

I'm pre-registered for 6 credits at CCC this spring (criminal justice courses) and 2 classes at Doane, plus an internship (hopefully at HRC where I work), and 2 flex classes. Okay, it sounds like a lot, but I'm really counting on CCC to be easy and not a problem. So therefore I will be carrying 33 credits, but the internship would be done in a month, and the two flex classes are one before the classes start after break from Doane and CCC and one during the last week at Doane for the 8 week term. So really, it's not going to be that bad. But if I have to drop some courses, I will so I don't overstress myself :).

Umm Doane doesn't have criminal justice, but they will add it next year. So right now I'm majoring in Human Relations at Doane and will have a double major once I get done :). That will be good. I'm applying for a new job right now, but I doubt that i will get it. But it's worth applying :). Anyway, I love Doane in GI and really enjoy the night classes for 4 hours better than being in Kearney all day long. It's just better for me.

What else? I guess nothing. But I just wanted to alert you that I have a computer now (oops, I mean WE). I'll be absent at X-mas time unless it's not on a day that I work. I work X-mas and pretty much the whole week, but I don't mind. Plus I work Turkey day and the day after--fine with me :). Well, I better quit before I go on too much longer.

I have to go get ready to do an appt at 11 in Hastings and then get ready to head for Grandma's :). Trans-Siberian Orchestra is here at the Qwest Center tonight, so I'm going and dad is going with me!!! I'm soooo excited! I'll post and tell everyone how it went tomorrow! Toodle loo for now!

Hi from Niki

Such excitement on the family blog these days! I'll echo everyone with CONGRATULATIONS to Elissa and Matt. I'm so happy for you both. (We'll have to send the Matts to the basement on Thanksgiving while we take over the dining room table with wedding chat.) Fun, fun, fun.

I too loved Kelly's Vegas pictures. They got me really excited, and I've added a few things to my "Must See" list for this December. It always amazes me to see people actually on the Hoover Dam. I think it's so hard to wrap your head around the actual size. Kelly mentioned in one of her pictures that they are building a bypass a ways down the river. HDR designed that, and I attached a rendering of what the final bypass will look like in a few years. Pretty crazy to think about how you'd put something like that together without, you know, falling. I’d like to visit the dam, but I think Cassi may dictate the agenda for her birthday trip. She keeps reminding me that I need to be getting into "Vegas Partying Shape". I'm not sure what that all entails, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a time machine set to 2001 (when I didn't have a job or a bedtime) if I have any chance at success.

Otherwise, life here is plugging along nicely. Work, school, and home are all going really well. We got the tiniest bit of snow this weekend so my countdown to the holidays has officially begun!

Thanks for the tips and links, Sue. Another option is bookmarking the page in your favorites. (Click on Favorites on top of your browser and click on Add to Favorites below.) You still have to open your browser, but you don't have to go to blogger.com site. Not sure if that’s easier or not. :o)

See you soon,
Niki

Blog "How-To's" - Sue

Glad to see so much activity lately... Here's a couple of tips to make navigation easier: To the right of our postings is a section titled "Links". I put Elissa's "The Knot" website there, and also one to Huskers. com (just because I didn't know what else would be of general interest... other suggestions are welcome!)...All you have to do is click on either of those and you go directly to the website. So, Elissa, we'll all know everything about your wedding!
Also, I access the letter directly from my desktop, rather than having to first go to my home page and go through all the blogger. com stuff. Here's how: When you are reading the letter, you will see the address of the page in your internet explorer..up above the letter, where all the icons are, you'll see the word 'address' and then a white box with an icon and the addres http://famltr.blogspot.com. You can click on that icon and drag it to your desktop. Your web page will have to be not taking up the whole screen. If it is, click on the icon between the - and x in the top right corner of your screen. Doing that will allow you to see your desktop underneath and then you can drag that icon and address. The next time you want to check on the family letter, all you have to do is click on that icon on your desktop, and you go right to the letter, without having to sign in. The only time you'll need to sign in is when you are going to post a letter yourself.
Hope this makes it easy for you...and now I realize it probably sounds terribly complicated.... Well, give it a try and see what you think!

Sue

Hi from Suki!

Hello to everyone,
First of all, congratulations to Matt and Elissa! Your engagement news is so exciting and gives us something big and special to look forward to next fall. We'll see you two at Thanksgiving and Niki and I are anxious to hear of any preliminary wedding plans you may have. This will be my first Thanksgiving at G&G's for awhile since I have been traveling to Texas to be with my mother, brother and sister and their families for Turkey Day. This year, however, the Wise family (along with Niki and Cassi) will be getting together in Las Vegas to celebrate Cassi's 21st birthday as well as celebrate the Wise Christmas. Steve will not be making the trip with us (he's not a big fan of Sin City), but we assured him we would return on Dec. 23 for our traditional Christmas Eve and Christmas day in Yutan.

Kelly, I loved your Vegas pictures. You two seemed to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city far more than your ma and pa did! One of my favorites sights of the hotels was the ceiling at the Bellagio. You probably know it's the largest presentation of the glasswork artist, Dale Chihuly, who was in Omaha a few years back at the Joslyn Museum where he had a huge exhibition. He was there himself and put on several glass blowing demonstrations, etc. and I was so impressed! One small piece of his glasswork sells for thousands of dollars and each contained such amazing colors and designs. Then I go to Vegas after that and you can only imagine how shocked I was to see his mammoth display of over 40,000 pounds of glass artwork hanging from the entire ceiling of the lobby. I see you captured that image vividly with your new camera.

It's getting really late, so in closing, here's a brief summary of what's happening with the Stamps. My boss at OTC resigned to take a big job in Indianapolis and left after a week's notice. I'm now the only one putting together an 80-page catalog until a new buyer comes November 1st. She's a smart, great person I've worked with at THT, but she's had no experience in the promotional products industry. My work days are long, but I think I can hang in there. This Friday Steve and I will travel to KU for Dad's Day at Cassi's sorority. Activities include tailgating at the stadium, going to the game against Colorado and a dinner/auction at the country club. This is the same activity last year that happened to be on the day KU played NU (and got their behinds kicked) and the Warren's went with us. Should be fun. The pictures above are taken from the KU/NU game a couple of week ago. It seems we hit the only week without rain and the game ended as Cassi wanted, which was KU to play well and close, but certainly not win!

I end my day watching the highlights of the big game today on ESPN and it makes me sad. Oh well, as Steve would say, "that's sports." One more quick note...I saw Aunt Marge today and she looks great!

Keep writing and good night to all!
Suki

Las Vegas trip--Kelly

http://picasaweb.google.com/kellylwiles/LasVegas2006

I just returned from Las Vegas where I was vacationing for a few days with Paul. We had a great time but I felt like I was on sensory overload most of the time. We saw the cirque de soleil show 'O' which was amazing, and visited the Hoover Dam. Those were the highlights of the trip for me. We also walked through just about every hotel/casino on the strip and got pleanty of exercise! We were staying on the North end of the stip (near the Stratosphere) at Sahara which is one of the older hotels--soon to be blown up and replaced I'm sure.
Above should be a link to my photo album from the trip. I just purchased a new digital camera right before we left for Vegas so I apologize for any poor-quality pictures, I'm still learning how to point and click with all of my new digital settings. I just gave up the 35-mm camera after the flash quit working.
I am sure all of us are heartbroken over the outcome of the game against Texas today, maybe we can get them in the Big-12 championship. What a nail-biter though, huh? That's about all of my news from Des Moines, can't wait for Thanksgiving to see some of you.
With love,
Kelly

Mary Jo says "Welcome to the Family, Elissa's Matt!"

Here I am at the library again!! Courtesy dictates I should "take my turn" in posting; however, I couldn't wait to thank Elissa for joining our conversation...and to welcome Matt to the extended Bull family. Your news is so much more fun than the "health reports" I've been posting since last February. Now we have a new website (the knot) to keep track of, too! Please, write again here, too! I love hearing from all of you in the next generation.

Elissa and Matt are Engaged!

Well, as some of you already know, Matt and I are engaged as of last Saturday! So I guess as my first posting I have some exciting news :) I have found out very quickly that there tends to be a standard in questioning after the initial announcement that goes something like this:
  1. Let me see the ring...
  2. How did he ask you?
  3. Have you set a date?
  4. Where will the wedding be?
  5. Oh yes, and are you excited?
So here are the answers to these burning questions!
  1. See picture above!
  2. Matt and I have been planning to get engaged/married for quite a while but had decided to do it on our time schedule and more recently talked of a wedding next fall. So I knew that it was coming very soon and Matt wanted the proposal to still be a surprise. Last Saturday we went up to Lawrence to watch the KU football game and as we were walking to the stadium, we stopped at the top of the hill (the highest point on campus) and Matt sat me down on the bench and proposed! I was very surprised and said yes of course. It was beautiful out with blue skies and the trees just starting to turn colors and Matt picked the perfect place as this is my favorite spot on campus and we met in Lawrence! We didn't have a camera but I found a picture on KU's website of the view to give you an idea.
  3. We are looking at next September (2007) but have not set a definite date because we need to call venues first. For more updates, you can check our wedding website . (http://www.theknot.com/ourwedding/ElissaWiles&MattBright)
  4. The wedding will be in Kansas, somewhere in the Kansas City surrounding area. Again, refer to our website in the future for updates!
  5. Oh and yes! I am very excited and so is Matt! And Niki has already informed me that she is more than willing to go over all the details with me at Thanksgiving!!
I've enjoyed reading everyone's blogs and hope everyone is doing well! Matt and I are heading to Grandma and Grandpa's for Thanksgiving so we'll see all you Stamps then!

Love, Elissa and Matt

TIME FOR ME TO CRASH THE BLOG!!!!

Hehehe. It's true, I haven't posted for ages, so I decided, why not crash the blog right after mom wrote??? Eh??? Hehehe, and besides that, I can ALWAYS go back and change her posts if I deem it necessary!!! *snickers*.

Anyway, here's the lowdown from me. Work is going swell at HRC. I really LOVE my job and hope that I can get off of probation in the 6 month time frame and not get extended to a year, OR get canned before then! But they are so desparate for the help right now, I hardly would want to believe that they would want to can me now! *crosses fingers*. Let's just hope that I don't get fired! :). But so far all is well. I'm due for a 60 day evaluation soon and that's not good because my first one could have been better. Grrr...I hope that I vastly improved on this one!

I AM DONE WITH EVIL STATISTICS!!!! *does a VERY happy dance!!!* I had that class for 8 weeks. That class was torture and I found it to be hard, but in the end, I stuck through it and my teacher said that I will be getting either an A or A-. I can't believe it! At least we do all our work in groups, which is good because that way I have a chance to work with other people on it. If I took it at CCC or UNK, I would have BEEN SCREWED and not been able to understand it or get a good grade! So I'm relieved that I have that class over with and done :). Now I get to jump into Problem Solving (which is using math, but logical thinking) and Psych of the Personality. That class I will like because we are studying the theorists behind our personality :). So I will study Skinner, Freud, Maslow, etc. That will be fun, except for the STUPID paper *rolls eyes*. But that will be another 8 weeks and then I will get 2 weeks off for the holidays and then go back to school :).

Not much else to write about. I just really wanted to post and tell you how my job is going along with how school is going :). *Yawns*. Well, I better head home and take an hour and a half nap because I have to tutor from 4:30-6:00 tonight a student who is having problems with Psychology. So I will talk to you later. Bye bye!

Update from Mary Jo

Well, I'm back at the library, where I helped Mom post her comments last week. We surely had fun working at that.

We had a good week together. My main mission was allowing her to rest and heal and to feed her tempting, nutritious meals. I think that was accomplished. We also took a couple of rides (accompanied me to Red Cloud on a Day Care visit), visited the Willa Cather headquarters, and ate pizza at Subway! On Sunday, Paul took her on a tour of our transitioning organic farm. He picked some young turnips from some pastureland, and we ate them for supper. She agreed they were pretty good. By the time we returned to Omaha, she was "almost as good as new", having regained much strength. I thought she looked healthy.

However, the visit to the oncologist brought the news she will be on some kind of chemotherapy pill...two weeks on, two weeks off, for a period of six months. It is supposed to be an easier therapy; but, still when you read the list of possible side effects, it doesn't look like any fun at all. Because, of course, her immune system will be suppressed, she will have to watch out for infections...and with the red blood cells also diminished, she will likely be tired. I just hope it's all worth it and really necessary to endure at her age; but, the oncologist said if it's too tough, the treatment will be stopped. We'll see.

Paul goes in for a CT scan in January to see if he's still all clear. Believe me, I am SICK of colon cancer...

Connie reports in

Hello to everyone! It is so good to see the message from our recovering Aunt Marge. I know you are receiving the best TLC possible at MJ's house.

I thought the crew would be interested in the little junket we undertook in August. Tom was an usher in his classmate Elijah Starzl's wedding on Aug. 18. (Yes, on Friday) Elijah attended SW Minn. State at Marshall on a BB scholarship and met his Renee there. The wedding was at her parents' lakeside home near Alexandria MN and the reception at the Lakeside Ballroom about 15 miles away in Glenwood. We traveled with Mike Masek and Linda Miller. Mike's son, Brian, was the best man. It rained practically the entire trip to Alex. The rain held off long enough to complete the outdoor ceremony. Both the wedding and reception were very simple and very lovely.

On Saturday morning we found the "Runestone Museum" in downtown Alex. It was very interesting to see the documentation of the discovery of this Viking artifact from the 1300's. The wanderlust Vikings apparently visited many places in N. America before Columbus even was born.

We then headed west and toured the Terry Redlin art gallery in Watertown SD. WOW--what a treasure trove of this talented man's life's work. I greatly admire his paintings and appreciate them even more now, knowing how he began drawing as a child and how the loss of a leg in a motorcycle accident led to his adult occupation.

Linda's daughter is a big Laura Ingalls Wilder fan, so we backtracked into MN, stayed overnight in Marshall and on Sunday went to Walnut Grove and the LIW museum there. Very interesting and well done for a little prairie town. We also drove a couple miles north of town and into a farm field to see the spot on Plum Creek where the Ingalls family's dugout was located. It was a beautiful summer day in the idyllic setting. I'm sure that it wasn't so idyllic in the depths of a 19th century winter.

On the drive from Watertown to Marshall we saw the huge (miles and miles) wind farm on the SD/MN border. The windmills stretched over the horizon. We could not count them all from the highway. I wonder how much electricity they produce.

Lately, our free time has been spent painting the house. The north and west sides are essentially complete. We'll do a bit on the south and east as the weather allows and then finish next spring.

Next Saturday we'll visit Joan in Manhattan and visit with Heather's family at their tailgate. If we find tickets, we'll attend the game as well.

Tom is excited because his Marine buddy, Alan Vanderwater, is coming to Neb. the for the Texas game. Alan's dad is coming also. They are from the Houston area and Tom is anxious to show them some of our cultural advantages! They'll fly in on Thursday and come to Columbus for hambugers at Glur's Tavern; ride in a combine on Friday; and experience Lincoln on game day. I hope our Huskers play well.

Time to close---
Connie

Hello from Aunt Marge!!!

I am here in the heart of my darling daughter's family and home --- recuperating from my crippled old bowel -- and enjoying being treated as a respected matriarch. After 8days of tests I was sent home for 2 days -- with the same bellyache --before going back for surgery. I had acolon resection and they removed the sigmoid part of my colon which had some cancer cells-- however only one lymph node out of 17 analyzed showed any cancer. Also they were able to remove the whole mass. I will see the oncologist next week to see what he has to say. I am very optimistic maybe foolishly so, but what the heck!

I have enjoyed reading the blog so keep it up in the tradition of Grandma Bull!

Family picnic pics from Nancy

Good evening from Geneva's first day of fall. After exciting weather last night (lots of warnings, thunder, lightning and wind but no rain) and an unexciting football game (so where was the West Coast offense? I'm sure mom was asking why they always run into the pile, just as she did all those Option years), today is clear, crisp and calm. I love this time of year.
Here are a few of my pictures from the picnic and after looking at my efforts, would really like some more from the rest of you. If you would email them as attachments, I would get some of them printed and add them to the albums. Our email address is snmeyer@galaxycable.net
I've added a picture from our trip to Maryville yesterday to see Beth. It's a 3+ hour trip, but the windshield time was worth it for us to see where she's living this year. We met one of her roommates who was at work, went out for lunch and made the obligatory stop at Walmart for groceries, etc. She is happy, knows what she wants to do (pre Occupational Therapy) and loves her dog, Milk. She and her roommate rescued her from the pound and named her Milk b/c that was the name she responded to after they tried many other words. I'd like to think it's b/c of Beth's roots in the dairy industry, but it's just a coincidence. She's living in a "new" house this year compared to the one from last year, built in 1873. She has two compatible roommates, unlike last year when one girl went to the police and alleged that the others, especially Beth, were threatening her. Actually, Beth was the only one who was still talking to her; the others had quit after a number of her bizarre actions. It's kind of scary to send your kids out there to who knows what....
She has two very part-time jobs--babysitting two little girls once a week and reading to Elementary students in the Read for America program. I agree with you, Mary Jo, that our kids turn out different from us; it's very interesting to watch all of the cousins' offspring and see how they're turning out. And since we have this letter, we can really keep up.
I showed Beth the Family Letter yesterday and she was impressed enough to bookmark it; thanks to you once again, Sue, for bringing us into this. Keep those posts coming!
Love,
Nancy

Update from Mary Jo

Back at my spot in the library...

Sue told you all Mom was in the hospital. John and David both reported to me that by Sunday Mom was in ALOT of pain and they thought I should come. So Monday morning I got ready to go to Omaha (and a meeting at my agency on W&Th if the outcome in Omaha allowed). By the time I got there mid-afternoon Mom was resting comfortably (pain meds administered "on demand")and she looked pretty good (color was good). By the time I left on Wed morning, she had been given two CT scans (one with contrast and one without), which showed nothing conclusive; a dye test to see if her right kidney was functioning (it was); an endoscopy, and a colonoscopy (both of which showed no blockage or other serious situation). Following the colonoscopy Wed AM John and I spoke to the GI doctor, and he surmised it might just be constipation, even though she didn't think that had been a problem??? She only has a partial stomach, and is never really hungry, so I can see why she might not be eating enough "roughage", but she tries to be aware of that and make good food choices. So, the plan was to introduce foods (she hadn't eaten for nearly a week at that point)and see what happened. So, I went on to Lincoln. Called Wed night, and nothing new to report. Called before I left Lincoln and Sue told me her tummy was sore again. Called John this AM and he said she had eaten supper last night and was reading the paper, watching TV and had good color when he visited her in the evening. Reen is going in this morning to try to quiz the docs. (For instance, when John asked her last night, Mom wasn't sure about the pain med...was she getting it, was it a continuous drip or only on her request.) So, in the absence of anything conclusive showing up in her blood work or all those tests, we don't know what's next. We don't want her coming home until she is pain free w/o meds, can eat and has a normal bowel movement. Hopefully, the doctors will agree. Looking at her in the picture sue took at the picnic and posted on the blog, wouldn't you agree she looked healthy at the picnic?

I need to go to the store now and buy groceries. The other two adults living in my home didn't do so well keeping the home fires burning. Well, in fairness, Paul had a couple of appointments, including with a "certifier" for the organic transition process on our farm, and Suzanne had a busier schedule at work, taking 2 full days of training on how to handle (and/or) manhandle unruly youth in her care. She seems to like this job, and I'm glad. It certainly wouldn't be my favorite occupation. But as I discover every day, my kids are surely their own people, which is how it should be. Andrew and his most recent job have parted company,(not sure of all the details...) but he already has some contract work lined up for a builder, and is doing some car repair, too. He seemed upbeat when he called this morning to ask for our e-mail address (he calls us rather than mails) so he could send a picture of the house he had lived in(before this farmhouse) that had burned to the ground last night. One of his friends from that area (the woman we met last year when we visited him last summer) called to tell him and sent him the picture by e-mail. She said they think it's arson. It made me feel sick even though it wasn't much of a loss and he is 100 miles away. I'm so glad he doesn't live in my backyard...But I am thankful he calls and keeps us up-to-date (I'm usually thankful, that is!)

September in Naperville

I decided to get away from the 9/11 special services for awhile, and chat with loved ones.

School began in late August. John and Kyle are now 6 and 4, so that means I have a few hours a week with an empty house while they are at first grade and preschool. First grade was apparently an exhausting adjustment for John, but we are into the swing of it now and are falling into a routine. Kyle misses him a lot during the day, which is touching.

I am very sorry that I didn't fly out for the picnic. My decision was very logical...I had just had a nice visit with Mom and Dad here in August, I was at the picnic last year...but this looks like the most fun you've had in years. Jim and Debbie planned lots of fun and the weather cooperated perfectly, it would appear. And attendance by the younger generation was great! Thanks to all of you who have shared pictures of the day.

Ed and I had a long weekend in Las Vegas early in August. We were actually there for our 33rd anniversary, coincidentally. He had work in the area, and I joined him. I was braced for the heat, but our heatwave here, at the time, actually topped their temps, at least when you figured the heat index. The dry, but hot, desert air actually felt refreshing compared to the hot, humid (about 85%)weather I left behind. Even so, it would be a more pleasant visit in the winter. WE pretty much hated the strip (sorry Suki, I just couldn't get into it), but LOVED the Cirque de Soleil 'O' show, Hoover Dam, and the Atomic Testing Museum. We also saw David Copperfield (Ed's choice. It was just like watching it on TV, so didn't do much for me, but was amazing.)

I just finished preserving peaches - freezing, canning, making jam. I don't get that done every year, even though it is our favorite canned fruit. We get Michigan produce at the local farmers' market, and the peaches this year were outstanding. I cannot begin to count how many I must have eaten fresh. Even though I find canning very gratifying, I'll be glad to get all the paraphernalia off the counters and packed back down the basement.

Love to all,

Janice

A few comments from MJ

I'm still at the computer in the library and the time left on my computer is running down, so I won't be able to go on and on like I might want. First of all, WAY TO GO, NANCY! Now that a "genetic Bull" has cracked to code for posting pictures, there may be home for all of us to follow suit. Of course, Paul and I still can't decide on our computer upgrade (which is why I am still reading these posts at the library). I know, we are pathetic...

It was so good to see you all at the picnic. I was so glad Nancy agreed to take over the family scrapbook. I was glad to revise and upgrade what Mom had maintained all of these years, but since Nancy contributed most of the pictures over the years, it seemed logical it would eliminate one step (her mailing them on) if she would agree to do it. Thank you, again. Actually, it was good to be able to go over 30 years of memories as I worked with the books. As Paul commented, our family is blessed and unique to be such a stable clan. In all of that time, only Grandma has passed away, and there's been just one marriage dissolve (Andrew's, which, of course, was a personal sorrow for us). But in the same amount of time in Paul's family, which I also think of being made up of stable people, there's been deaths of most of his uncles and aunts, his parents, the suicide of a cousin, and several divorces among cousins. Of course, his "older generation" was older than ours, but still.

It was good, too, to see the enthusiastic participation of the younger generation. I'm so glad to know all of you. Paul was pleased to visit some with Kelly and Paul. As he said, "They are such nice young people." Hope that makes the trip worthwhile, Kelly...

My Paul commented yesterday about how good he feels (as I was complaining about achey joints and a "BLAH" feeling.) So far the blood tests are coming out great. We know we have a ways to go before he can be declared "cancer free", but we are very grateful he is doing so well.

Suzanne seems to be enjoying her work with the chemical dependency unit and her night classes through Doane at GI College Park.

Bye for now.

Anniversary News from Nancy

Good evening, dear family,
I trust Sue (and her very patient lesson given Sunday at Debbie's) that all the jibberish above my typing will translate to pictures so that you can see some of what Stan and I did in Nebraska City for our 35th anniversary. We went with Ken and Mary and the guys played golf while Mary and I explored the many nice shops downtown. We went to Arbor Winery just outside of NC; it's a cooperative venture of 50+ grape growers in SE Nebraska and they make their wine and sell it from a former one room schoolhouse. It's charming.
After supper at the Lied Lodge (an impressive building filled with leather furniture and timber columns) we went on a carriage ride past Arbor Lodge. We were amused that Stan knew more than the driver did about J. Sterling's home. Sunday morning's brunch was wonderful (as it should be, since I'm told that the chef used to cook at the White House) we went on the Tree Adventure--a walk through the forest and up a tower. We ate lunch at Kimmel orchard and headed home. It was a pretty low-key anniversary (no cruises for us! :) but we enjoyed it a great deal and I recommend it.
The photo albums from the family picnic are here and I must say I am intimidated by the awesome responsibility of maintaining it. I will do my best because I know how important they are to everyone. If you have pictures you'd like included, send them to me, plz.
Love,
Nancy

Hello from Cassi!

Hello family,
I have heard so much about this family blog thing I figured I better add something to it rather then just browsing other's postings. I have been back at school for about 3 weeks and everything is wonderful. The first two weeks were filled with sorority recruitment and little sleep. After the process was over, we started right into classes and a normal social life. My friends and I are enjoying fun-filled days and weekends before school life gets too difficult. I currently live with five other girls in a house of 85. It sounds crazy but I absolutely love it! This weekend we had a back-to-school party and the theme was USA (which explains the picture).
But I just wanted to say hello and make my first post. I will be home for the Neb. vs. KU football game. I am sure I will see a lot of you there!
Hope everyone is well!

Love, Cassidy Noelle Stamp

Details from Des Moines (Kelly)

I realized when reviewing the previous posts that I have not posted since I became an official, licensed pharmacist. I passed my board exams in early July and got the actual license in the mail just a week ago or so. Thus far, I have truly enjoyed my job. Everyday is different and I just never know what kind of customers I will deal with each day. My first weekend working alone as a pharmacist I had my license threatened (with no validity) by an angry customer who was seeking cold medicine to be transferred to another store, it's a long story but we got it sorted out and I still have my license and hope never to deal with that customer again.
I am finally feeling settled in my apartment and really enjoy the area where I'm living. I'm right across from the local library and have 2 grocery stores, several restaurants, my bank and a gas station within walking distance. I decided to check out the neighborhood walking/biking paths on my rollerblades tonight and ended up face planting into the dirt after losing my bearings down a hill and a curve so I might stick to running from now on. We also have a good park district that offers adult programs and I am signing up for ballroom dance lessons with my boyfriend Paul (who is a little reluctant to learn but has agreed to attend with me).
That's about all of my news but I will be in attendance at the Bull family reunion over Labor Day weekend and look forward to seeing you all then.
With love,
Kelly

Hello everyone

Hi all! I just wanted to quickly post and update you about school and work. Most of you don't know this, but I have accepted a job at the Hastings Regional Center. I am working in the HJCDP unit. That stands for the Hastings Juvenile Chemical Dependency Program. I really like it and am over with orientation on the 25th. I was in three days of lecture about policies and procedures and am now on the unit shadowing. I will work 24 hours one week and 16 hours the next week to get my 40 hr pay period. I am working from 8-12 on the days and every other weekend. I will be at the school helping the youth with their homework and making sure that they stay on task. I really like it and it's a fun job.

I also have enrolled at Doane College in Grand Island. I have switched to Human Relations as a major. I really like it there. The courses I'm in this semester are Statistics and Interpersonal Communications. I have oodles of statistics to do tonight. Ugh, I hate that class. Plus I hate math. But what can I say? At least we do our homework in groups :). But I really like Interpersonal Communications because it will teach me how to better communicate with people. I was telling my mom that I'm really glad that I made the switch because I can drain Psychology courses for my electives at Doane and not declare a minor in it. At UNK, there was no way I could take all the Psychology classes without minoring in it. Plus I'm not in college for the "college life experience". I'm in it for getting a degree so I can get out and get a job :).

I might or might not be at the family reunion. Grandma wants me to go and I have figured out that I won't be working that weekend. But who knows if I'm coming or not. I might instead try to hit the state fair and hit the midway. Or I might just stay home and do some stupid statistics. Unfortunately Labor Day falls on the following Monday, so I can't use that for an excuse ;) :P. But really, I might go. It depends on what I feel like that day.

Well, I just wanted to tell you all about my new job and school. If anyone wants to do my statistics, give me a hollar and I'll let you do it!! Hehehe. Talk to you all later :).

Post Disney World (from Niki)

...it's a small world after all...it's a small world after all...
What they say is true: beware, that song gets stuck in your head for eternity. As my mom mentioned, I'm back from sunny (and hot and sticky and sweaty) Florida. We had such a great time! Both Matt and I had been to Disney World and Disneyland several times with family, school and softball, but this was our first time together. I couldn't believe how much new stuff they've added even in the last few years. We stayed for a week (highly recommend), stayed on the resort (highly highly recommend), and managed to survive the August heat (highly don't recommend). The first few days were spent on the big rides, but by the end, we were rubbing elbows with the kids for a picture with Mickey and riding the spinning tea cups. I guess Disney really does bring out the kid in everyone.

Summer school came to a merciful end, and after a too-short summer break, I'm back at it next week. Some days it seems like it's going by quickly, and other times next December seems like forever. I'm taking a marketing branding class this semester that should be really interesting, so I'm looking forward to that.

Otherwise, life at home has been pretty relaxed. We're going out to dinner with my mom and dad tomorrow to celebrate their 31st anniversary with dinner, cake, and vacation pictures. If you can't torture your parents with over 150 vacation pictures (yay for digital cameras!), who can you torture, right?

I'm pretty sure Matt and I will make it to the big picnic in a few weeks, so I'll see you all there.

Back to School Picture from Suki

Hello,
Just a quick note to say hi and to share this "back to school" picture taken last week of our two college juniors before they're off to school again. This picture was taken at Cheeseburger in Paradise, where the Stamps and Warrens held this dinner ritual for the third year in a row. How time flies. Niki and Matt have been at Disneyworld in Orlando since Tuesday. I'll feel much better when they're back in Omaha on Monday. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at Debbie's on the 3rd. Stay cool! (I mean that literally, too).

Family Picnic, etc.

For anybody wondering - Yes we will be hosting the Family Picnic and we are planning at this time for Sunday, Sept. 3 at our house. Proper invitations will be coming, but feel free to pass the word along to anyone who won't see this.

Owen is done playing baseball so our life is more our own again, but that means we can no longer avoid thinking about getting a new roof, painting the exterior (or hiring it done but I hate to think about how much that would cost,) and other mundane joys of home ownership.

Owen enjoyed playing Legion ball again, but there were only two other carry overs from the team last year, and most of the players were 2 years younger than him. He pitched well, but the team wasn't as strong so he didn't get as many wins and they didn't make it to the State Tourney. I think we were all ready for a break however, and managed to not be very disappointed. We know it's getting rather late, but Owen is still undecided about whether he will go back to Independence Junior College or not. If he doesn't, he will probably end up at Wesleyan, play ball there, and get an excellent education in the process, which of course in the long run is much more important.

It's getting late, that's all for now. One of these days I'll get more into the habit of keeping up with everyone's news and contributing more often.

This is Mary Jo posting from the Library

Hi, everyone!

Yes, Suzanne's not the only one smart enough to use the computer at the library!! However, I don't have the luxury of a leisurely composition because this thing comes with a timer and my time is ticking down...so here we go, excuse grammatical and spelling errors, please.

Yesterday, I officially crossed over into the next decade, and I was really distressed about it for about a week beforehand. Now that it's a fact, I feel much better. I was treated to a pre-party last week before several of my friends left town on vacation and yesterday one of my friends took me to lunch, so that all helped ease the transition. However, I noticed most of my cards were "nice" rather than sarcastic, so I guess 60 must not be a very "funny" age to be! Sue offered to host a family get-together for the occasion, but with our car (yes, Suzanne is right, they are all "ailing" (and elderly))on the fritz and Paul perpetually irrigating in the heat and the humidity, I decided I didn't want to take off by myself. And I hesitate to leave him when he works so hard out there.

Speaking of Paul, he is doing fine. His "every three-month" checkups are showing no problems, and he feels good, so we're hopeful. He told me last week, he really doesn't think about his health much, and I don't either. We do remember to be grateful, however. And, as I said, he goes in for routine blood work and check-ups.

Mercy, it's hot and HUMID today. I need to mow this evening. The garden's overdoing itself. I've frozen cauliflower, broccoli, made saurkraut (it's an experiment), frozen corn and beans, and soon there will be tomatoes to preserve. We do eat it all, and most of the processes I enjoy.

Gotta wind this up; however, at the risk of becoming the "old lady who always talks about health", I have a question. Do any of you have experience with migraines that affect your vision?
I saw shooting stars and had some dizziness after mowing the other night. Paul took me to the ER, fearing I was having a stroke. A thorough exam revealed I probably had this form of a migraine (I've never had the traditional type of migraine headache). So I don't know if I'll have more of these or if it was a one-time occurrance. Sue tells me she experiences these.....Any comments?

Final note, my mom says the Bulls in Lincoln who had the triplets are Frederick Bull's son, Carson, and wife. They now have 5 girls and one boy (one of the triplets) Since their kids are 6, 4, 2, and triplets I don't suppose this is a result of fertility treatments!!!

AHYIE!!!!!!

HELLO GANG!!!!

Sorry I haven't written for awhile. WE STILL HAVE NO COMPUTER!!! We are working on getting one before school starts. Let's see if that happens. Well, too much to update you on in very little time. So I'm going to take a deep breath and HERE I GO!!!!

1) INTERNSHIP IS ALMOST DONE!!! I have around 8 hours left. It was a great summer for me to do this and I've learned alot about the parole system. Susan (who is my supervisor) has been one of the best to work with. It's been great! It has taken me all summer to get my 120 hours in, but with me being so busy, there is no time to get it done! So after Thursday, I'm homefree!

2) I'm transferring schools. There was a situation that happened at UNK between me and a professor. So the people I've run the situation by have agreed and said that I need to leave there and get a new college and that it would be a better experience for me. I'm transferring to Doane College in GI and majoring in Human Relations. I can still do criminal justice that way, but it will give me more avenues to pursue. So I'm very excited. Plus I don't have to minor in anything and still be good to go. Now if they put a criminal justice major in, then I will double major :). School starts August 14th for me :).

3) The fair is this week. I've entered a picture of Stormy that I took last year. I got a white, but if you ask me, the judge did not understand the point of the picture. So I'm trying again. Plus I also got a picture of the boys going in. It's so cute. I hope I do well :).

4) I've had problems with my car. Wait, all our cars are defunct. My brakes were totally gone and had to get new brake pads. My clutch was going out and I had to get a new one. My back tires are chopped and I need to get new tires. But then something that controls the forward and reversing motion of my car is about to go and I need to get that fixed. So yeah, you can say my car has gone to hell. LOL. But it's all fixed soon :).

5) I went swimming at Columbus's waterpark. I will NOT go back because it wasn't worth my 2 hour drive. But hey, I do give them the EXCELLENT slides (bowl and inner tube are the best). Little kids would like it, but I prefer one with a pool and stuff :).

6) Gatekeeping is going well this summer. I have been impressing my co-workers with how strict I am and not letting outside food and drink getting into the park. They all say that I would be good to get into the corrections field and by golly, that's what I'm going to do. So that's all been good there also :).

7) Not much else to write. This is the abbreviated story in such little time. I need to get back to my parents's e-mail. So I'll see you all later!!! Bye bye bye!

Cool thoughts . . . (Gigi)

Hello,

Temperatures are flaring. Thank goodness for air conditioning, and lots of it!

I've enjoyed reading your letters and decided to sit a spell and contribute something.

We have news! For those of you who have not heard, Marty moved his family. We are enjoying the extra room, front porch, swing set and slide, basketball hoop, and much more. Our new address is 6005 South 159 Circle, Omaha, NE 68135 (phone number stays the same). If any of you are in the area of Millard Oaks {off 156th between Harrison and Q Street in Millard} please drop by. We'd love to show you our new digs.

Our latest hobby . . . minor home projects and cleaning in preparation to sell Walnut Grove home. The work is okay but I'm enjoying the extra time spent working alongside Marty. He is as particular about detail as I am, so I'm discovering. Our goal is to sell it in better condition than when we moved in over 17 years ago. That has not been a small feat. It was virtually spotless then -- with a little sweat and blood it is again (with the exception of the garage ... but we will get there too).

Oh, by the way, we have first-hand knowledge of Joe's fine lawn mowing skills. He's been doing a fantastic job for us just until we are down to only one lawn maintenance. Joe's commercial mower probably works in half the time it would take most homeowners. What a blessing. He is a fine businessman and owner.

Like her cousins, Erika is looking forward to becoming a Millard West Wildcat. This week is softball camp. Next week it's basketball camp. Opportunities for meeting other girls before the start of school is a good thing.

Maria enjoys reading in her very own room. Her calendar is kept open for whimscal plans with friends. She's been swimming, attended a day camp for one week, and likes playing kick ball with the new neighborhood kids.

Shaylee keeps us all hopping. She usually gets what she wants from one of us. Does it bother us that she does? No. Monsters are a huge element for her. Her imaginary Panda bear fends the monsters off in her defense. When the scene becomes to stressful, Mom or Dad are beckoned. Bugs and spiders make her squirm, but not enough to leave them alone. Fireworks made her tremble with fear for the first time. She reacted the opposite last year, much to our surprise. Maybe next year she'll enjoy them once again.

As I write, it appears a thunderstorm is brewing. I should wrap this up. Shaylee is expecting me for a safe return home from daycare.

Stay cool ladies.

Regards,

Gigi

Nancy's News

Like Janice, I don't have any bull stories, except that a young couple named Bull (didn't catch the first names) had triplets today in Lincoln. They already had three children, so there are now at least eight people in Lincoln with our name. Wonder if we're related?
Stan and I went to Breckenridge a couple of weeks ago for a special ed directors' conference. I went to meetings and Stan went exploring during the day, then we went out with other Nebraskans at night. It was lots of fun, I learned a great deal, the scenery was breathtaking and the company delightful. On the way home, we decided to take a different road and found ourselves winding up and up and up until we were at the Continental Divide by the Loveland Pass. We stood near the snow and took pictures of each other by the sign. If I ever can figure out how to post them, you'll get to see them :}
Connie wrote a wonderful entry about our trip to Duncan, so all I'll add is that it was a grand time; I'm already looking forward to repeating it next year.
I've read several good books recently and thought I'd share my reactions with you. I read "The Red Tent" (recommended by Janice, right?) and I enjoyed the writer's lyrical style. I was stunned by how women and children were treated in this Old Testament time, but she could make it sound not so horrible just by how the author wrote. Until the end, that is, but I won't share that part. I was also surprised at the difference in how people worshipped and who they worshipped. It didn't sound much like what we do now, so thank goodness for Jesus and the New Testament.
I read "Freakonomics" and even though I'm not a numbers person, I found it fascinating. Two economists look at seemingly unrelated issues and make connections using statistics.
I also read "Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons". The title does not reflect the tone of the book at all. It tells the interwoven stories of five women who start a book club in the 60's and follows their lives through the 90's--through babies and the ups and downs of marriages and families. It's written in a clever format--each woman has alternating chapters about what's happening in her life. It's alternately hilarious, touching, heartbreaking, and rings true. I recommend it highly.
The Schmidt family, mom, dad, Beth and I got to do something fun this week: watch Owen pitch at Haymarket Park. He did very well--10(!)innings of scoreless ball, then his team ended up losing in the 11th. Afterwards, we visited a bit with Bob Shanahan and his wife (their son plays for the Lincoln East team that was playing next) and met Eleanor and Jeannie as they were arriving. Just goes to show that what I've always said to the kids: Whereever we go, there is a cousin. :)
I host my annual Summer Brunch for teachers and paras this coming week. I ask for RSVP's--Regrets Only--and if everybody comes who has not yet RSVPed, there could be 52 people here. The most I've had in the past was 35, so even though I think it will be about that many again, I can't count on it, so I'm planning to serve them egg casseroles, fruit and coffee cakes in the backyard. I'll let you know how it went in my next entry.
Mary Jo, I too remember the dry, dry summers and how agonizing it was to watch the corn die. I know many people who are terrified of thunderstorms and I cannot fathom that. I remember being much more scared of it not raining and the emotional and financial fallout. Fillmore County is filled with pivots, so while the farmers complain a/b the cost of irrigating, at least they know they'll get a crop.
Janice, I notice that you're still a night owl since your last entry was posted just after midnight :)
Sue, your flowers are quite impressive! Thanks for posting them.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the picnic.
Love,
Nancy

Family Picnic?

We have been plotting out the rest of our summer, and I was just wondering if there is a date set for this year's Bull Family Picnic. I would guess that it is Debbie and Jim's year to host.

By the way, Sue's petunias are amazing! Are they some of those new 'Wave' petunias?

July 4th - Sue

It's 10:30 pm as I start to type this. Fireworks are going off one after the other..this is the 4th straight night in our neighborhood. It starts each evening about 6 and continues til now or later...last night til nearly midnight. None of the little sparklers and smoke bombs stuff we bought for the kids when everyone here had small kids in the neighborhood....oh, we had a little better than that, but the stuff they shoot off now is what i would have considered a huge fireworks show as a kid. I'm amused to hear a leaf blower running in the background, as someone is trying to clean up their portion of street while the fireworks are still going off.
Just wanted to share these pictures of my flowers because hardly anyone gets to see them! I bought these two petunia plants at Sam's Club, late in May...they didn't even look that good when I brought them home, but I repotted them anyway, and look how they've repaid me. And the other amazing thing is my grapevine, which we planted probably 5 or 6 years ago,
so I could have a grapevine and make wreaths.... last year, it suddenly bloomed and had grapes and this year it looks like more of the same. The birds got to them before I did last year, but I'm going to be more diligent this time and see if I can harvest a few of the grapes...

Thanks for letting me share!
Sue

July 3rd from Janice

I promise to do a better job of proofing my contributions, or perhaps just need to do it a little earlier in the day! Hopefully you all read with such lightning speed, that you breeze right over my errors!

Thought I'd wax nostalgic today. I regret that we created far too few traditions with our own kids, as I remember many of ours fondly. Among those is the 4th of July picnic at the Elkhorn park. I'm sure it was chosen because of location, but I never understood why we couldn't picnic at a park with a pool. In spite of this shortcoming, we always had fun lighting snakes on the old tennis courts and playing with each other. But the most fun for me was when the progressive town of Elkhorn got a bowling alley which was airconditioned and open on July 4. Several of us were deemed old enough to walk across town and spend the afternoon in climate controlled comfort. This was a huge treat as none of our homes or cars had AC at that time. As I recall, we were almost the only ones in there at that time of day and bowling may have been as cheap as 3 games for $1.

As evening rolled around, we gathered at the Stamp or Bull farm to pool our fireworks and eat watermelon. Grandpa Bull, CB not Ervin, would exhibit his patriotism by bringing the biggest watermelon and the biggest Roman candles he could buy, or so it seemed to me as a child.

If I remember right, the Warrens were not present for any of this. I think perhaps you all spent the day with the Warrens at someones lake house. Is that correct?

Wednesday from the Wiles

I am so amused that the Bull family has so many actual bull stories to share! I feel somewhat inadequate as I don't have a single bull incident to report! I will comment, however, that the 'Steve pulling the dead bull from the pond' story sounded very 'Dances with Wolves'-esque. At least he had a tractor instead of a horse and didn't need to drink the pond water! That's progress.

We are still spending much of our social time attending wedding showers, baby showers, and weddings. I guess we're at that time of our lives. This past weekend, we traveled to Des Moines to attend Kelly's roommate's wedding. Kelly was a bridesmaid and had a horrible time procuring the lovely dress. I will try to condense the saga.....bridal store kept saying the dresses had been shipped...they had not...measured the girls over their clothes...arrived just two weeks before the wedding...Kelly needed hers shipped to DM....it arrived in a soot covered, crushed box...dress enclosed in plastic so was OK....needed alterations...oh no! The good news was that she found a lady who works out of her home and did a perfect job of shortening 3 layers, including one chiffon, steamed it for her and charged her only $15, declining the $20 Kelly offered her. K and I thought that was quite a bargain. Would you agree, Connie? The wedding was lovely and the torrential downpour held off until the end of the ceremony. There were no other events scheduled for the church, so we had a very liesurely receiving line and hung around until it let up. Some nice church person noticed a car or two about to take on water at the lower end of the parking lot and moved them for the surprised owners. It didn't even look like rain when we went in.

The next day we helped Kelly complete her move from her campus apt. to her solo apt. She will miss her roommate, Sarah, who is moving to Tulsa, but has a nice place with a great location in Urbandale (west suburb of DM). She treated us to lunch at her new HyVee store where she is now employed, and we all shared Chinese. You mentioned how good the food was at your new HyVee, Connie, and we agree!

We are really appreciating our ideal weather so far this summer. Last year, in contrast to most of you, our area had the hottest, driest summer on record. I spent many hours watering trees and shrubs. This summer is much cooler and , so far, much wetter. We returned Monday evening to 3.1" in the gauge. I have things blooming that I didn't even remember I had, as they did nothing last year and have spread like crazy this June. My theory is, that if they survived last summer, they developed a hardy, deep root system which now enhances their performance. Perhaps Paul could tell me if this could be so, or if the plants are just enjoying the nice weather.

Ed took lots of digital pics this weekend, but, as MJ observed, I am of the bloodline that doesn't know how to get them from camera to computer. Perhaps Ed will add a couple over the long weekend.

Naperville has a Ribfest as a fundraiser for Rotary Club or Kiwanis or one of those every July 4th weekend. While yours sounded like fun, Connie, ours is soooooo big and crowded (and I've heard very expensive for eating) that we avoid it like the plague. We will probably have a picnic with friends and take in some of the big fireworks in the area. Last year we went to Lisle (suburb immediately north of our house) which has a hot air balloon festival, concerts, carnival, etc. We attending a concert of the National Guard Band, if I remember right. (It was some military group.) We had actually gone earlier to hear another singing group which was followed by the band. They started with some old 'Big Band' stuff and we thought we'd stay awhile since Mom and DAd were along. The band was outstanding and included vocalists and a variety of music.
I will definitely go again if they are playing.

I can't begin to tell you all how much I am enjoying this blog! Keep posting!

Love,

Janice

Hello from Warrens

Half way through summer already. Wow. I'm on vacation next week..i've taken off the week of the 4th for, I suppose, the last 21 years, as the 2nd is Joe's birthday and I always liked having that week off to be a 'stay at home mom'... when he was younger, we'd have to have a kid party, then a family party, then the 4th of July...and by the time i went back to work i felt like i'd been in the kitchen for days. Not quite so many parties anymore, but the week still goes by quickly.

After 6 months of hard weekend work, we finally have renters ready to move into Mom's house in late July. A young couple coming from Kearney..just getting married in mid-July...she will be employed at Papillion schools and he has his own home construction business. Gretna should be a good place for that business! We are so delighted to hand the keys over to them and let them take care of things for a while! Hopefully they won't have to call us much with maintenance issues...

John is working on the road-widening project north of Gretna where it will become 2 lanes each way all the way from Q street to Gretna. He likes these projects so much better than standing out on the interstate somewhere and he usually gets to see all kinds of people he knows when he's on some local project like that. He's getting the bug to go fishing, so i think he may try to do that before the end of July.

Joe's lawn mowing business has turned out great. He currently has about 20 weekly mowing customers, and 5 fertilizer customers. He's bought a second large mower and yet more equipment to fill up our garage with. We gasp when he keeps wanting bigger and bigger stuff, but he has no fear and is sure he can pull it off. Most of his business has come from word of mouth and referrals. He has our yard looking like a million bucks and wants to re-landscape our front yard yet this summer, so i'm all for that. I usually don't get that kind of enthusiastic cooperation for projects like that! Here's his rig..

And here's a couple more Football 101 pictures Debbie sent me. It WAS a lot of fun and so impressive that the entire coaching staff would give up a whole day to amuse 900+ women! That's John Blake, the former Oklahoma coach and now a member of the UNL defensive coaching staff with us in the first picture (somone correct me if those facts aren't accurate!!) And most of you probably recognize the second guy...suki and I had left shortly before he arrived at the after-party where this was taken...while we may be able to post pictures on the blog, we obviously lack the perseverance gene present in the rest of the family!

That's it for tonight..
love, Sue

Ribs, Ribs, Ribs

Hello everyone from RIB CENTRAL. Where's that? This week it's in Platte County. Saturday and Sunday the little town of Duncan hosted their 3rd annual RibFest in beautiful downtown Duncan. Over 5,000 people attended and enjoyed ribs, very thin potatoes, funnel cakes, beer, and some very listener-friendly music.
Stan and Nancy came from Geneva to share our culture. We all were impressed with the organization and workers who helped things work so well. The area was blocked off with MANY cattle panels which were lined with orange snow fencing. There was only one entrance and all had to pay a fee to come in. Five rib vendors were present and we sampled from most of them. Before leaving we voted for our favorite. Next year the top two will return and other vendors will bid for a chance to participate. My personal favorite was Baby Huey's from Fremont. YUM!
Sponsors of the event were the Volunteer Firemen, Duncan Wrestling Club and the VFW. Gary Schlesinger (father of Husker/Lion Cory) is the chief of all. It was a beautiful summer evening and a chance to see lots of people, including some of Tom's buddies.
After we left the Rib Fest we toured Duncan Lakes, a little sand pit development on the Platte south of Duncan. Then we pointed out Dorothy Lynch's home on Hwy. 30. Yes, the salad dressing is made in our area. On the way into Columbus we stopped at Pawnee Park and toured the Andrew Jackson Higgins National Monument. It's an impressive area honoring the man who invented the "Higgins Boat." This water craft carried our troops ashore in many places, most importantly on D-Day. Higgins was born in Columbus. One of our high school history teachers came across this fact and eventually led the effort to establish a monument to Higgins' accomplishments.

This weekend a bank parking lot in downtown Columbus will be the site of another rib eating venue. Columbus is celebrating its 150th birthday and the ribs are part of the general celebration. There will be more vendors this week, including Famous Dave's.

Congratulations to you,Kelly on your graduation and new job. I'm sure all will go well with the boards.

I am still enjoying the memories of Football 101. What a fun day with our family and other women who appreciate the game. Coach Callahan's enthusiasm and passion for the game were contagious.

Suki, we appreciated the sad tale of Steve and Chuck's bull. It reminded Tim of a cattleman who came to his livestock equipment display years ago. The rancher was lamenting the loss of his very expensive($20,000 - $30,000) bull. It was very hot on the first day of the bull's duties. He decided to cool off in the pasture pond. He emerged minus his main breeding equipment-----a hungry snapping turtle couldn't resist the dangling treat!!!!!

Time to close--
Connie

I have no clue how mom got computer access...

The reason I say this is because I wanted to update you all and let you know that our computer got fried by lightning before the 15th. Or was it after?? Either way, we have no access to a computer right now. i'm sitting on my friend's Mac and I HATE macs! Anyway, I wanted to let you know that is why we haven't posted for awhile (minus the 15th and today) and e-mails.

I now am a gatekeeper at the complex this summer for softball. It's okay, but I got sunburnt yesterday and it hurts!!!! Oh well. It wasn't even that hot out! Not bad pay, but could be better :). Oh and internship is going well, but I don't want to continue school. There's a LONG story behind that.

Like if I DID continue school, I'd want to transfer either to UNL or UNO. But you know what??? Mom's not letting me. Hey Joe, hit me up about UNO and let me know what you didn't like about it please. I"m curious to know. Oh and UNL...if anyone goes there now, let me know. I can't keep track of all of you who are in college!!! So yeah, I don't even want to get a 2 year degree from CCC. I just am TOO BURNT OUT on school and want to get a full time job, move out and be on my own. Now I'm looking at security jobs like loss prevention. But there is a degree at CCC specifically for security, so I will talk to Lauri (my advisor and teacher) about that either next week or the week after.

Otherwise not much else to write. I'm off for now. Yawns. I got up at 12 today and am so tired. I have to be at school this week for work at 7:45 am. Grrrr..I hate that! So I need to run errands and get some groceries and fireworks! So I will talk to you all later!!!! Bye bye bye!

Staying Up Late with the CWS - Suki

Hi to all,
Wanted to write a quick note and share some pictures of some of our recent adventures. First, Cassi mentioned she wanted to accompany her father on one of his evening "cow checking" trips. (Actually I sent her out to find out if he had a second family somewhere because he was gone so much :o) She found it interesting but was totally disgusted with the amount of slobbering, crap and flies bovine bring. She enjoyed the newborn calves but was intimidated by the huge bull (no pun intended). A few days earlier, Steve and Chuck's other bull lost his life with an infected penis. A bit of an occupational hazard, wouldn't you say? The next day Steve found him stone cold dead in the lake. Sad. Steve waded in the murky, death-ridden water up to his chest, hooked him up with chains to a tractor, dragged him out, dug a deep hole and buried him all by himself. He even showed Cassi the makeshift grave. Can it be any more gross than that? Father's day was great. Cassi took Steve to a CWS game and it was a nail-biter to the very end. Later, Niki and Cassi helped me put on a cook-out with Grandma and Grandpa, Matt and his parents from Aurora, Dave and Linda, Marty and Gigi and all the little girls. A perfect evening to eat outside. We toasted four great fathers on that special day and celebrated Marian's birthday as well. That's probably enough for now. Except for the CWS games, I find I'm watching sports I never watched before like the NBA and even World Cup Soccer. Time for bed. Love to all.

New job--Kelly

Hello to all,
I wanted to update you all on my life post-graduation. I have started work at Hy-vee pharmacy in West Des Moines and have really enjoyed it so far. The picture is from my white-coat ceremony 4 years ago when I started pharmacy school. Now I get to wear my white coat everyday as an almost-pharmacist. I still have to pass my board exams which are coming up at the end of June and July 5. I hopefully will pass without any problems but a prayer never hurts:)
My roommate is getting married this weekend and I am in the wedding plus I am moving to a new apartment on Sunday with the help of Mom and Dad so the next few weeks will be very busy with working full time, the move, wedding and studying. Have a great week everyone!

Hello, from Mary Jo

Does anyone else carry a residual uneasiness from childhood when we have hot, dry days and STRONG winds? Today's a real downer for me. At least we have a thickening cloud cover and some chance of rain tonight.

I still remember the year I was turned 10 years old was a horrific summer and I was aware of a general air of anxiety in our house. On the very day of my birthday, the corn died and turned white before our eyes. That is a powerful memory.

Maybe it wouldn't disturb me so much if Paul wasn't farming. Of course, it's not the same thing...we have another source of income, which is a huge difference...but it is still wearing. I asked him this morning why he still thought farming was fun. He just smiled.

Speaking of Paul, he is feeling very well and seems to have all of his strength, plus more, back. He goes in to the cancer center monthly for general blood work and every three months will have blood work to detect cancer markers and to see the oncologist. The Dr. says everything looks very good. Of course, this will be a several-year process. After 3 years, the chance of no recurrence is better; and five years is considered to be the time you can talk about being cured. As they say, one day at a time.

Don't worry that the parole officer will have the Meyer household under surveillance, Nancy! Suzanne is accompanying a female officer from Grand Island for 120 hrs for an internship this summer. She usually goes with her two days a week, and they've hit lots of communities. She must have a huge territory. Suzanne never says anything about the people or the cases they work on. She is very aware of the confidentially issue. However, she does seem to be interested in the work. I think it would be pretty depressing; but obviously, it's work that needs to be done.

Thanks for all of the recent posts, and please keep them coming. Oh, one more observation: Has anyone else noticed the strong genetic trait us "blood cousins" share? NONE of us have been able to post pictures, whereas Suki, Sue, Ed, and the contributors from the next generation have shared wonderful images with us! Thank goodness the gene pool is getting diluted!! Speaking of that, now I have to refer to the wonderful directions Sue sent us on how to post messages so I can send this thing. GRRRRR

Quick update and other news

Hi everyone! I just wanted to post today and say hello and to tell you that internship is going great! I was in Thayer and Fillmore Counties today (June 8). Nancy and Stan, we drove by your house and I pointed it out to the parole officer. The only reason I remember your house is because your address is so easy to remember :). And yes, the garage door was open and there WAS a car in there :). But I showed Susan where you live :).

Anyway, class at UNK is going quite well. Students are complaining because it's intense and that there is too much homework etc. They also say how it takes up most of their day. Puhhhhlease! They don't commute an hour to and from like I do! So it takes up most of MY day! But I don't think it's that intense. Mom says that Darlene's classes really got me ready for this writing intensive one. I don't find it very intense and I also don't find it that hard. I also really like the professor because I had him last sememster :). I am currently working on a 12+ page research paper! So far, I handed in my rough draft and he was VERY impressed. So I just have one more point to work on and my conclusion and my paper is done! I also have 2 more reaction papers that are 4 pages each on an article of my interst that deals with criminal investigation. So it's not bad. I have 2 more tests and then I'm done!!!

Otherwise not much else here. Just that I might attend a Introduction to Sex Offender Treatment seminar on Friday. I wasn't for sure if I was going to go, but I'm getting pressure from Susan to go so there is someone there she knows. It will cost me around $200 to do it. So mom really doesn't want me to, but I should. It would be good for me. The good news is that it DOES count for credit :). So who knows what will happen. I will get 1 credit and it's an undergraduate upper class level. So I might do it. Not for sure yet.

Well, I better get going! I just wrote my two reports for my internship for this week and now I have to go watch Firewall the movie. It's due tomorrow and I should watch now because dad will like it...so I think. So yeah, I'm off! Talk to you all laterz :)

Hello from OKC

Hello Family!! This is Theresa and am glad to catch up with all of your news. And especially grateful to learn that Paul is doing well. I have to confess that I didn't go to this site until tonight. I will try to keep up better with all of your news postings.
We have some new photos to share from the Big XII bb tourney. Mom & Dad Bull came to visit and several folks from Yutan were also here. It was very enjoyable to catch up with Annette Rogers; Virginia Behrens; and Paula & Julie Buck. I encouraged their group to take the Water Taxi ride in the evening and even ride the cocktail taxi if they thought that sounded fun. Keith Rogers said they did enjoy this activity, so much so, that they made it into a "cruise"!! They stayed on it for THREE hours!
Dad, Mom & I visited the OK Sports Museum in Guthrie. What a walk down memory lane that was for Dad. He recalled many stories about several of the baseball players.
Jake & Matt are back home for the summer. Both are working. I'll share about their jobs next time.
I'll need to have Bill or the boys help me scan our pics and post them next time also. Bill still wonders how I operate a complicated US machine at work and remain ignorant to the basics and guts of the PC world. Just a different interest level, I suppose.
Love to all, your lighter cousin!!! tj

Football 101 from Suki

Hi to All,
Just wanted to tell you all that I had such a great time at Coach Callahan's Football 101 camp Friday with Sue, Connie, Nancy and Debbie. I'll save the details for all of us to share at the Bull Family Picnic, but did want to post these pictures. The player with Debbie and Connie is Courtney Grixby and in another shot we are eating lunch in the press box overlooking the awesome stadium. The tall player with me is Zach Potter, and one shot is all of us at the "On the Dock" party afterwards. Included in this shot is my friend Cyndee and her 86 year-old mother. It was so much better than I expected and just a fun-filled day with great entertainment, great weather, great company, great food and Husker football! Does it get much better than that?

Take care, Suki

From Ed

We finally added some pics from Kelly's Graduation weekend, so please scroll down to see them. Janice actually started the post several days ago, but didn't have the pics to display, thus explaining the date sequence (of course, being the male - I am to blame for that...)

This being our youngest, we can "stick a fork in it - we're done"!
Enjoy!

AHHHYYYYYIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEE!

Hello. I said I would update my Economics grade. The title says it all. I was 1 or 2 points away from a C and got a D+. So now I have to repeat this wretched course at UNK. Grrrr...that I cannot stand. My advisor told me that it's not a requirement for his program, instead to graduate from UNK. So yeah, he said that he has never heard of them substituting a course for it. So I'm DOOMED!!! DOOMED I SAY, DOOMED!!! O_o. Sorry, I am not very thrilled.

I might take the course at CCC next spring. I'm booked this fall. I'm doing my courses at UNK and bringing them back to CCC except for one class. I am going to do that so I can kill two birds with one stone and have the courses count at both institutions. Plus that way I can get all my classes done XD. I'll have my AAS degree next spring in criminal justice. I was originally planning on moving to Kearney and working at YRTC and have an apartment. But that has changed. I will just stay here and commute, live here rent-free and mooch money off of my parents (HA!). But the degree will come in handy in case I have to drop out of UNK or something like that. At least I will have a degree that means something in the real world! AA degree in Academic Transfer means NOTHING!!!

Well that is the economics news. I will start my Crimainl Investigation course on Monday. I'm very excited for that. Plus it's a professor I had this spring, so I know what to expect out of him. I know that he is not intimidating and very easy to approach. I really enjoyed his class this last spring. That was my comparative class. It was quite intriguing. Oh and he authors the text book to make that even funner :). I'm excited though. However, I dread the major paper I have to write. Maybe he'll take it easy on us :). I can only hope.

Well half way through the class, I will post an update on it and if I've had a major meltdown yet. I will probably be ready for summer finally after that class! Like I said before, I wasn't ready for school to get out. LOL. Internship is going well. I will be up in GI next Friday!

Okay, off I go. I have to rinse out a pitcher and make Kool-Aid since my parents are gone to an art show/wine festival. No, they aren't drinking that I know of. I was going to go until mom said I can't go get drunk for my first time there (Boo hoo). Anyway, I would like to taste some wine sometime in life. But I'll do that at a later date. Instead, I need to go get hyped up on sugar and go see if the mail is here. See ya later alligators :). Yes, I was joking about getting wasted. I would like to try wine though :).
